Heat Pumps

If you’re looking for an energy efficient heating and air conditioning system that will heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer, then what you need is a heat pump! Heat pumps operate the same way as normal air conditioners do in the spring and summer, using a special refrigerant to pull heat out of the air in your home and a fan to blow the cooled air back in. The winter heating season is where heat pumps stand out – unlike furnaces, which burn natural gas or oil to create heat, heat pumps operate like an air conditioner in reverse, pulling heat energy from the outside air and blowing it into your house!

Since they don’t burn fuel to produce heat, heat pumps are some of the most energy efficient heating systems around. And at James A. Wheat & Sons, we offer a number of heat pump services designed to keep your system up and running as smoothly and efficiently as possible! Some of our heat pump services include:

Heat Pump Repair

One of the great things about heat pumps is their durability – with proper maintenance, your heat pump can last as long as 20 years! That said, there may come times when your heat pump goes on the fritz. If your heat pump isn’t running properly, is cycling on and off too frequently or if your heat pump’s automatic defrost cycle is malfunctioning, call Wheat & Sons for heat pump repair! Heat Pump Inspection

One of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your heat pump is to have it regularly inspected and maintained. Since heat pumps run all year long, they are subject to more abuse than a standard AC / furnace set up, meaning you have to be extra diligent about your heat pump inspections. That’s where Wheat & Sons comes in! We can provide heat pump inspection services to keep your heat pump running smoothly all season long.

Heat Pump Replacement

As we said, heat pumps are usually extremely reliable and built to last for at least 10 – 12 years, and usually longer if they are properly maintained. If your heat pump is getting up there in age and you find yourself needing more and more frequent heat pump repairs, it may be time for heat pump replacement. If this is the case, just call Wheat & Sons! Our heat pump replacement technicians can remove your existing heat pump system and replace it with a newer, even higher efficiency model! If you need MD heat pump replacement, call Wheat & Sons today!

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps take heat that is produced by the earth and use it to heat and cool your home. Usually, the earth is cooler than the air in the summertime and warmer than the air in the wintertime. This makes geothermal heat pumps the most efficient type of heat pump, because they rely on the relatively stable temperature of the earth.

There are two different types of heat pumps you can buy depending on how much available space you have. A horizontal closed loop geothermal heat pump has a large pipe buried in trenches about 4 to 6 feet deep. When the geothermal heat pump turns on, a separate pump turns on and circulates water around the pipes, activating the heat exchange system. A vertical closed loop geothermal heat pump requires much less land space. It requires a hole about 100 feet deep depending on the size of the system. From there, the piping works much the same way as a horizontal closed loop geothermal heat pump.

While geothermal heat pumps are much more expensive than an air-to-air style heat pump, they are much cheaper and more efficient to operate and usually pay for themselves within a matter of 5 to 7 years. Geothermal heat pumps also have a much longer lifespan than most air-to-air heat pumps. As an added bonus, some geothermal heat pumps provide hot water.
