Rinnai Condensing Tankless Water Heater

Unlike standard tankless water heaters that use one heat exchanger to heat water, condensing tankless water heaters use two - basically, water passes through the first heat exchanger and is heated by a series of burners while the hot flue gasses pass through a second heat exchanger, cooling and condensing and transferring their heat to the surrounding water. The acidic condensate is then neutralized and discarded.

Condensing tankless water heaters release only a small quantity of gasses (and cool gasses at that), so they can use PVC or ABS venting ducts as opposed to standard stainless steel ducts. These ducts are much cheaper and easier to install than the stainless steel required for conventional tankless water heaters.
