Heating FAQs

Posted on: September 4, 2017

If you are like most homeowners in Maryland, you don’t give much thought to your heating system. Whether you have a furnace or heat pump, you expect it to work as it should when you turn it on every year. Yet sometimes you might find yourself with a question about your system. At James A. Wheat & Sons, we are happy to answer those questions. Here are some commonly asked questions we hear often.

FAQs About Heating Systems

  • How often should I service my furnace?

At James A. Wheat & Sons, we recommend scheduling a maintenance service appointment at the start of the heating season, particularly in the fall before you are relying heavily on your heating system. This will ensure that it is ready to provide reliable service all season long.

  • I need a new furnace. How can I know which one is right for my home?

When you are in the market for a new furnace, proper sizing is critical. We will send a technician to your home to determine your needs and help you select a furnace that will efficiently heat your home.

  • Help! My furnace smells like it is burning, what can I do?

It’s very common for a furnace to give off a burning smell when it runs for the first time. This is due to a small layer of dust that settles on the heating element when you are not using your furnace during the summer. This dust harmlessly burns off, causing the smell. If you are noticing a burning smell at any time other than the start of the heating system, call James A. Wheat & Sons right away to ensure you are not having a problem.

  • What is the typical lifespan of a furnace?

Most residential furnaces will last between 16 and 20 years.

  • How is heating system efficiency measured?

Heating system efficiency for combustion systems is measured in Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). Heat pump efficiency is measured using a ratio called coefficient of performance (COP). The higher these numbers are, the more efficient the system is.

  • Is it time to replace my furnace?

If your furnace struggles to properly heat your home, creates cold or hot spots, or is 15 years old or older, it is time to start thinking of replacement. Rising energy costs can be another sign that you need to consider replacement. If you are unsure about whether replacement is the right choice for your furnace, contact James A. Wheat & Sons for an assessment.
